Lisa Camilleri captured her 21st WSA title and third in a row at the Mackay Open 2013. Camilleri had only returned to the tour in January after 18 months off through injury and is now poised to breakthrough the top 50 barrier after this week's performance.
Following victories at the Queensland Open and Caboolture Open, Camilleri's chance of making it a hat-trick of wins was looking unlikely in the final against top seed Milou Van Der Heijden. The two had met previously in the Queensland Open final in which Camilleri won in straight games. This time the Dutch number two found herself ahead two games to love and looking to win her second title of 2013. However, Van Der Heijden had a much tougher route to the final, enduring two five setters in the quarters and semi finals. This may have taken its toll as Camilleri edged her way back into the match and stayed ahead in the last three games to seal victory in just under an hour.
Camilleri is just the third player this year to win three titles in a row after Nicol David and Amanda Sobhy. Camilleri also holds the third most WSA titles on tour of active players after Nicol David and Rachael Grinham.
Final:
[2] Lisa Camilleri (AUS) bt [1] Milou Van Der Heijden (NED) 10-12 11-13 11-8 11-8 11-6 (56mins)
